Welding (900 Clock-Hour Certificate)
Welding is a 900-hour program training in the areas of shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, gas tungsten, thermal cutting including CNC plasma as well as blueprint reading, metallurgy, fabrications, welding symbols and shop-related equipment. The welding program involves learning safe working habits, terminologies, basic and advanced welding in all positions and various metal cutting processes. Welding is now certified through NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research).
Certifications can be attained through the American Welding Society on Plate and Pipe in addition to bend testing for SMAW and GMAW for bridge/critical structure welding.
Class work will consist of approximately 15 – 20% theory and the remainder will be hands-0n shop production.
Good vision, basic math knowledge, ability to lift 50 pounds, good eye-hand coordination and able to take orders are essential.
In addition, students will have the opportunity to participate in:
- SkillsUSA Club (America’s largest student co-curricular organization)—attending and participating in business-style meetings and competing in skill-related contests.
- Students also have the opportunity to join in with other students to raise funds for their various activities. Past events included Longaberger Basket Bingo, Buckwheat Festival, serving concessions at WVU functions.
